Praised in the Washington Post for her “special sparkle,” Pamela Butler’s musical journeys have led to vocal appearances in three countries, six US states and Washington, DC. Her lyric mezzo voice with its agile upper extension has enabled her to excel in the works of composers such as Haydn, Handel, Mendelssohn, Mozart, Rossini, Schumann, Sullivan, and others.
She’s appeared on the operatic stage in over 35 roles, with companies including Bel Cantanti Opera, Binghamton Savoyards, Centre Stage Opera, Crittenden Opera Studio, Loudoun Lyric Opera, Mount Vernon Players, Opera International, Oswego Opera Theatre, Riverbend Opera, Syracuse Opera, Victorian Lyric Opera, and Washington Savoyards. Favorite roles include Berta in Il Barbiere di Siviglia, Clotilde in The New Moon, Dame Hannah and Mad Margaret in Ruddigore, Despina in Cosi fan Tutte, Fidalma in Il Segreto Matrimonio, Filipyevna in Evgeny Onegin, Hansel in Hansel und Gretel, Isabella in L’Italiana in Algeri, Maddelena in Rigoletto,Madelon in Andrea Chenier, Mercedes in Carmen, Nicklausse in Les Contes d’Hoffmann, and Zerlina in Don Giovanni.
Pamela’s lifelong interest in British history and musical comedy led her to specialize in the genre of operetta, particularly the works of Gilbert & Sullivan. She has now sung at least one role from all 13 operas in their canon.
She has also been a featured vocalist for numerous recitals, oratorios, concerts, and sacred music events with organizations throughout the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic regions, including Arlington National Cemetery/Fort Myer Chapel, Chesapeake Chorale, Loudoun Chorale, Loudoun Symphony, and the Piedmont Singers. Her mezzo solo appearances have included Bach Cantata #4 (Christ lag und Todes Banden), Handel’s Messiah, Mendelssohn’s Magnificat, the Mozart Requiem, and the Schumann song cycle, Frauenliebe und Leben.
In addition to performing, Ms. Butler has brought years of business and non-profit arts management experience to Northern Virginia as a founder, producer, board member and advisor to several regional organizations, including Loudoun Lyric Opera, the Loudoun Arts Council, Virginia Commission for the Arts, the Leesburg Commission on Public Art, and the Friends of Leesburg Public Art. She received her education in business administration, voice performance, and arts management from LeMoyne College, the Metropolitan School for the Arts and George Mason University.
She currently serves as Music Director for St. Gabriel’s Episcopal Church in Leesburg, VA and on the Leesburg Performing Arts Commission. In addition to singing, she is also an accomplished guitarist. She enjoys lecturing and performing for civic organizations, senior living communities, private parties and special events.
