Thanks to All Who Attended The Lost Recital 1915
On February 13, 1915, eighteen-year-old Dorothy Leona Jewell presented a classical voice recital in downtown Philadelphia that was the culmination of her intensive musical studies. Over the next three years, the young singer would marry and have a child, before succumbing to the Spanish flu pandemic, which claimed the lives of nearly 50,000 people in the city of Philadelphia alone and 5% of the population worldwide. 110 years later, in October 2025, mezzo-soprano Pamela Butler, pianist Mark Irchai, and guest student recitalist Lilli Hoehl, re-created Dorothy’s concert,
in honor of her grandson, Paul Muench, on his 87th birthday. The recital became a joint benefit for Loudoun Lyric Opera (an organization founded by Butler which is now led by Irchai as Artistic Director) and the Lucketts Food Pantry, with over $5000 raised for the two nonprofits.
